Everyone has taken that trip over the rainbow and fallen in love with Dorothy Gale and the Wizard of Oz. The world has embraced the Kansas farm girl since she was picked up by a tornado and thrown into the Land of Oz with a variety of character adaptations and movie memorabilia, including costumes. From Halloween to stage productions, theme parties and playtime, Dorothy costumes have been a popular choice and are great for all dress-up events.
Like Superman or Darth Vader, Dorothy has become a pop culture icon and has one of the most recognizable costumes. She was created by L. Frank Baum, author of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz novel, but is best known by Judy Garland’s portrayal of the character in the 1939 film. Dorothy’s signature outfit features a simple white blouse worn under a blue and white gingham dress. Her hair is tied in two braids that feature matching bows while the signature ruby red shoes cover her feet.
The Dorothy costume can be worn by all ages. Girls love stepping into the costume and bringing the beautiful character to life. It puts their imaginations into overdrive and lets them embrace the character’s smart, sincere and positive qualities. Wizard of Oz group themes include all of the friends Dorothy meets on her journey including the Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion and Tin Man as well as all of the movie’s unforgettable characters like Glinda, the Wicked Witch, Toto and the Munchkins. A group theme allows friends and families to recreate the film and experience it in a new way.
As Dorothy discovered, there is no place like home and as pop culture discovered, there is no costume like Dorothy Gale.
