HomeServe is proud to announce the results of its support for Sport Relief 2012. On Friday 23rd March, Sport Relief hit the airwaves with a fantastic night of TV, and more than 270 HomeServe staff at the company’s Walsall call centre volunteered to receive donation calls.

They were to be joined by CEO Jonathan King, who rolled up his sleeves and manned the phones, and – putting aside their differences for the evening – club mascots from Birmingham City, Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

More than £63,000 was taken on the night, with over £3,000 coming in the final 15 minutes. The largest donation taken from an individual was a generous £2,000.

HomeServe CEO Jonathan King said: “It was a great evening to be involved in. I’d like to thank everyone who played their part, giving up their night to help such a good cause and raise such a phenomenal sum. We were taking donations right until midnight, which is testament to the generosity of people in the West Midlands.”

In 2010, more than 90 call centres, staffed by a phenomenal 6,340 charitable volunteers, supported the Sport Relief campaign, helping to raise a mind-blowing £44 million – this year, on the night donations have already topped £50 million.

Staff were encouraged to bring the kids along to an evening of family fun, with toys, fancy dress, a pizza buffet, drinks and sweets.

Prizes were be given away for the best Jedward hairdo, and volunteers and their children each received a free raffle ticket for the chance to win some superb prizes including a 9” portable DVD player, camera, and a range of vouchers. Everyone was also given a free Sport Relief t-shirt.

As one of the UK’s biggest fundraising events, Sport Relief brings the entire nation together to get active, raise cash and change lives. All the money raised by the public helps people living unimaginably tough lives, both at home in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries. Organizers are anticipating hundreds of attendees over a two-day period when the Greater Chicago Antique Postcard & Paper Americana Show and Sale gets underway in Countryside Ill., Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22.

In its 21st year, this show offers vintage to modern postcards for sale in all price ranges.

Sellers and buyers are coming from across the U.S., Canada and Europe; as well as dealers with over 100 tables of material for sale. Lots of original historical photos and printed images of all states, and many foreign countries, and 1000’s of other topicals, Halloween, Hold to Light, Santas postcards and other historical paper memorabilia and ephemera will be for sale. Numerous boxes of inexpensive cards will also be available.

“We look forward to bringing a diverse group of postcard sellers and buyers together in Countryside twice a year,” said Jim Taylor, show producer and owner of Courthouse Square Antique Postcards.

Show highlights include hourly drawings for gift certificates; free appraisals-time permitting, and free hobby magazines and Barr’s Postcard News issues while supplies last. Archival postcard supplies and reference volumes will be available for purchase.

“Our vendors bring quality collections and accumulations for their collector customers, and are always looking to give free appraisals, time permitting to collections and accumulations brought in from the area,” said Taylor. “Several large collections have been appraised and sold at the spring show in recent years. Our expert appraisers look forward to seeing new material here year after year.”

This semi-annual postcard show is one of the nation’s largest, involving buyers and sellers bringing millions of antique postcards for sale, as well as buying collections and accumulations, and giving free appraisals of most all vintage postcards, old photographs, and paper ephemera.

The top dealers and collectors of historical view postcards, artist signed images, topics, posters, and photographs are expected to attend. In addition, Chicago areas’ own Lake County Discovery Museum, home of Curt Teich Postcard Archives, and home of the World’s largest public collection of picture postcards will display at the show.

“Early bird” admission is available at 8:30 a.m., Saturday for $ 20 and covers both days. Regular admission is $ 5 for both days. Show times are 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Saturday, April 21, and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Sunday, April 22.
