A Close Look at Halloween Masks

May 132011

If you have already started to plan this year’s Halloween costume, you might have taken some time to look in a costume store or two or check out the selections online. A major part of the costume industry includes Halloween masks. A popular part of Halloween celebrations, Halloween masks are not the answer to everyone’s costume needs. Here is a look at the good and bad of this Halloween accessory.

The good

One of the best aspects of Halloween masks is that they disguise who you are quite thoroughly. Whether you choose a Halloween mask that covers your entire face and head, or just a portion, the final effect of either is that it alters the shape of you face. This can make it even more difficult to recognize you than it would be with merely face paint.

Another positive of Halloween masks is that they are very simple to use. If you paint your face, you will need a good deal of time, patience, and some artistic talent to get the right effect. With a Halloween mask, you simply slip it on and you are ready to go.

Masks can also be an inexpensive costume idea. By wearing a solid colored outfit and slipping on a mask, you can instantly become the character that the mask represents – other accessories are optional. You can even combine Halloween masks with your everyday clothing to become a zombie doctor, a cat who is a chef, or other unique idea.

The bad

Halloween masks can be dangerous if they are worn improperly. Special care should be taken to make sure that the mask does not block your vision or your breathing. This is particularly true with children’s costumes, since an improperly fitting mask could cause them to injure themselves while out trick or treating. You will want to try the mask on to make sure that it fits properly before wearing it on Halloween night. Remove masks when driving to ensure that you are able to see properly.

Halloween masks can also be hot, so if your Halloween evening will be spent in a warmer climate or a crowded party room you may become uncomfortable rather quickly. If you feel that you are overheating, remove your mask. Also make sure that you drink plenty of water during your Halloween celebrations.

While Halloween masks can be an inexpensive alternative to a full costume, they can also become quite pricey. The more detailed a mask is, the higher the price tag will often be. So if you are on a budget, you may have to settle for a less detailed Halloween mask, or an alternative like face painting, to achieve a similar effect.

Halloween masks can be an excellent addition to your Halloween costume, but they are not the perfect solution for everyone. Only you can decide if this Halloween accessory is right for you. If you purchase a mask and decide later on that it is not as comfortable or as safe as you would like, you can also use it as a creepy way to decorate your home.

Spooky Pets For Halloween

March 292011

Halloween is right around the corner and maybe you have an idea of what you would like to wear, but do you have a Halloween canine costume picked out for your dog? There are so many ideas on costumes for pets. A dog is the best pet to dress up because like us, they don’t mind looking silly.

The possibilities are endless. When my dog Shiloh was alive (shepherd/lab mix) he used to go trick or treating with me and the kids. Of course he was in costume; he was the hit of the neighborhood.

One year he was Catdog from the cartoon of the same name.  We just found the largest size stuffed animal of a cat at a thrift store and tied it to his backside. That costume, because the show was so popular was the talk of the town for a week.

Another year we dressed Shiloh up as a nanny.  He wore an apron and a dust cap. That was a big hit and very easy to do. He looked like the dog Nanna from Peter Pan.

Now we have a Dachshund and he is so much fun to dress up. Chewy loves wearing clothes, I think it’s a Doxie thing.  He was Spiderman one year, a costume we bought on line. There are many sites for dog costumes on line. It makes things very easy.

The next year I made his a costume. The party we were having was a Super hero theme so, I just sewed a piece of material to one of his sweaters with Super Sausage written on it. It was a super hit.

The possibilities are endless. If you can’t make it just order it.  The pet costumes do not cost a lot. But you can always make one. If you have a white dog put black spots on him and he is a Dalmatian. Tie a baseball cap to his head and put a jersey on him. Put a karate outfit on him and tell everyone he is taking lessons.

Whatever you do on Halloween don’t forget mans/woman’s best friend. You will have a spooktacular party and have a dog gone good time. Do it right and your dog can win the best Halloween costume award this year!

Easy Indoor Halloween Decorations

February 222011

I always like to start with a Halloween theme for my Halloween decorations. Ghosts, ghouls, skeletons, etc… then build from that point.

In a ghost theme, you can create ghosts from sheets and pin them up on walls or have them hang from different elevations in your home. Such as railings, doorways, lamps, cabinets etc. are inventive.

Ghouls and skeletons are pretty much the same concept except they can be placed in a chair or a bathroom or place it on a wall right where people might be coming in.

Pumpkins are my favorite theme. You can carve many different designs out of a pumpkin even if you aren’t very artistic.  There are stencils for carving pumpkins such as pet faces, silly faces, scary faces, or even inanimate objects such as tomb stones. How about a carving of a pumpkin?

I always thought it would be cool to have a pumpkin carving contest. The guests can bring their own pumpkin and you decide if it should be carved at your house or if it should already be carved when they arrive. I like the latter idea because of the mess they make.  If you do decide you want it done at your house just insist they clean the pumpkin before they arrive. This will cut down on the mess. Put garbage containers near every two people and have a time limit. You can judge by categories or just overall whose was the best.  And then the pumpkins become part of your décor.

Be sure to use plenty of spider webs so your house looks creepy. Spiders are great also. If you have a basement and use it as your party room place spiders lining the walls going down the stairs with a large spider up above.

In the bathroom if you really want to scare someone squirt fake blood all over the tub walls and shower curtain then close the curtains part way. Then you can put some fake body parts in the tub.  And don’t forget the sound effects.

Halloween can be as much fun for decorations as Christmas. So have a ghoulish good time.

Nightmare revisited video 01Marilyn Manson “This is Halloween”

February 212011

*READ**********************************
Nightmare Revisited Marilyn Manson “This is Halloween” comment and rate please.
lyrics:
Boys and girls of every age
Wouldn’t you like to see something strange?

Come with us and you will see
This, our town of Halloween

This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Pumpkins scream in the dead of night

This is Halloween, everybody make a scene
Trick or treat till the neighbors gonna die of fright
It’s our town, everybody scream
In this town of Halloween

I am the one hiding under your bed
Teeth ground sharp and eyes glowing red

I am the one hiding under yours stairs
Fingers like snakes and spiders in my hair

This is Halloween, this is Halloween

Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!
In this town we call home
Everyone hail to the pumpkin song

In this town, don’t we love it now?
Everybody’s waiting for the next surprise

Round that corner, man hiding in the trash can
Something’s waiting no to pounce, and how you’ll…

Scream! This is Halloween
Red ‘n’ black, slimy green

Aren’t you scared?

Well, that’s just fine
Say it once, say it twice
Take a chance and roll the dice
Ride with the moon in the dead of night

Everybody scream, everybody scream

In our town of Halloween!

I am the clown with the tear-away face
Here in a flash and gone without a trace

I am the “who” when you call, “Who’s there?”
I am the wind blowing through your hair

I am the shadow on the moon at night
Filling your dreams to the brim with fright

This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!
Halloween! Halloween!

Tender lumplings everywhere
Life’s no fun without a good scare

That’s our job, but we’re not mean
In our town of Halloween

In this town

Don’t we love it now?

Everybody’s waiting for the next surprise
Skeleton Jack might catch you in the back
And scream like a banshee
Make you jump out of your skin
This is Halloween, everybody scream
Wont’ ya please make way for a very special guy

Our man jack is King of the Pumpkin patch
Everyone hail to the Pumpkin King, now!

This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!

In this town we call home
Everyone hail to the pumpkin song

La la-la la, Halloween! Halloween! [Repeat]
